The honest read: Surfshark's promo is cheaper per month ($2.49 vs $3.25+), but its renewal jump is the documented top complaint (~45–100% per the fact pack) and the exact renewal figure is unpublished; NordVPN's renewal is higher than intro but the +40–70% standard-rate range is on the record. Which is “cheaper” depends entirely on how many promo terms you'll actually ride — neither page hides that both revert toward $13–16/mo-class rates. Jurisdiction, honestly
NordVPN is registered in Panama (outside the Eyes alliances), with parent Nord Security in the Netherlands after the 2022 Surfshark merger and main operations in Vilnius, Lithuania. The load-bearing posture is the no-logs claim — the EU/Netherlands parent sits in a different legal regime than the registration jurisdiction, the tension its 2022 lawful-requests disclosure surfaced.
Surfshark is Surfshark B.V., Amsterdam — a 9-Eyes member, moved from the British Virgin Islands on Oct 1, 2021; our sources note no mandatory VPN data retention, and GDPR applies. The 9-Eyes membership is stated plainly (competitors' pages often omit it); the no-logs audit is the counterweight.
